What is osteopathic medicine?

Osteopathic Medicine at Upper Echelon

At UEM, our physicians are trained in osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT), a hands-on technique used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness and injury. Osteopathic manipulative treatments can treat a wide range of symptoms and conditions, often focusing on pain relief, headache relief, improved function, and mobility. While not every patient will require OMT,  we include osteopathic manipulative techniques in our patient’s treatment plan when our physicians feel they would benefit from it.

What do osteopathic manipulative techniques look like?

Our OMT sessions occur in the same environment as a normal clinic visit, but with space for our patients to lie down on a padded table if needed. We begin by discussing your treatment plan and conducting a cursory physical examination to feel out any problem areas and observe your movements/range of motion. Depending on the technique, you may be asked to sit, stand, or lie down on a table. The physician will then use their hands to apply a precise amount of pressure to targeted areas including muscles, joints, or the spine.

These techniques can be adapted to treat specific conditions, from back pain and headaches to asthma and sinus disorders. OMT is characterized by its gentle, non-invasive nature, and our physicians adapt their approach to suit your specific needs and conditions, The overall goal is not just to treat specific symptoms but to enhance your body’s overall health and ability to heal itself.
